About us

The Big Story staff currently consists of 10 graduate students from UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. The diverse backgrounds of the staff/students combine journalistic experience with business expertise to form a team with the editorial skills, business acumen and drive to craft the concept and ensure a sound execution.

The Big Story project is lead by UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism Teaching Fellow John Battelle, co-founder of Wired and founder and Chairman of Industry Standard. Battelle, an ASME judge and longtime analyst of media trends, brings more than 15 years of experience to the creation of this journal.

This media venture began in the Fall of 2001 as a course taught by Battelle covering all aspects of magazine creation. Coincidentally and sadly the concept of The Big Story was developed before the tragic events of September 11. The tragedy has provided the focus for the launch of the publication.

A prototype issue of The Big Story has been created and the launch of The Big Story is on schedule for June 2002.

The Big Story is currently seeking foundation support and individual support to fund the initial launch and to facilitate endowing a position to take over the ongoing operations of the publication. For more information about how you can help, contact John Battelle.

The Big Story will continue under the management of a dedicated Managing Editor to be hired and staffed with graduate students from UC Berkeley.
